Strange you mention swimming pools....

I know we tend to knock Doomsday Preppers because it's drifted towards the nut-job and fruity-loop end of the prepping spectrum, but it's worth checking out some of the earlier episodes for ideas. I watched one the other day where a family specifically bought a home with an old unused swimming pool. They part-filled the pool so only the deep end contained water. They added fish. They then fitted a poly-tunnel over the pool and made this into what was a near perfect aquaponic system for growing food. They even had their kids fishing for their dinner from the shallow end. Add in the usual solar panels and rain-water catchment and they were well on the way to self-sustainability. I was very impressed and quite envious. I think this episode also contained Southernprepper1 and Engineer775, two chaps who are well worth a search on the interweb or Facetube, or whatever it's called nowadays. Another talented chap to check out is Markerbouy, he has some pretty good off-grid advice for the likes of us on a budget, who can't afford the 20KVa Kubota generator backup power option.

Absolutely! If the people that make those shows (and plenty of others) got hold of most of us on here they would present us in a similar light, admittedly a few DDPs would be hard to present as anywhere near normal by British standards, anyway you IMO and LW have, and a good few more of us I expect including me if I had the chance would get out of the city for a more self sufficient life, it's not all about SHTF by a long shot, cities worked once upon a time as they centered around an industry, the people within them had a common purpose, these days a good percentage of people are there because they were born there and are stuck with it, and all too often trapped by it.

Makes you wonder though doesn't it. Building their own bunkers in plain sight!

I've seen a few of Engineer 775, think he's fabulous with lots of good ideas which I have taken on board I.e don't put oxy absorbers in sugar or salt!! Not seen Markerbouy so will look him up. Thanks for heads up Briggs.

Absolutely, trying to persuade my Geordie OH we need to move to Northumberland, beautiful place and a chance to be off the beaten track a bit more.

I've seen this one
The guy was some IT guy, and all the neighbourhood knew he's prepper. Once they asked him what will happen if SHTF and if he's not afraid of neighbours after SHTF he said "No" because they like me - yeah right - a prepper that advertises whole country he prepps is not prepper - it's attention seeker.

Partially true but also some preppers just like to help others. If no one out there did these videos that would be a lot of knowledge wasted. I would not for a minute however suggest that its good for anyone to be blatent about it and show faces or too much of the surrounding area to show how to.
