Survival saw anyone tried/tested?

I've used a couple of wiresaws....Don't bother is my advice (although I'm told they're great for what they're designed for, cutting live bone)

I've got a folding pruners (Stanley I think...might be wrong as it was bought for me) and have used several, ideal for thumb to wrist sized wood as long as its well secured

My pocket chainsaw is better on wrist thick and up, again well secured...... If you're using one try not to let the two 'legs' of the chain get parallel as you'll end up with a small uncut pillar of wood thats smaller then the links of the chain.

Most of the time though, I use an axe

Ive had one of these. Cut very well but must be kept moving but the wire snapped. I cut through up to five inch logs with it so keep it to small stuff and its great, I wouldn't rely on it for heavy duty work though.

Reluctantly, I made up a couple of BOB's. the idea of running away is foriegn to me (I had so much kit hangin' about I had to do something with it),and they will double as 'emergency kits'. In there are a couple of wire saws-only 'cos I had them. They work ok. However, I am a BIG fan of genuine Victorinox Swiss Army Knives.the saw on those is AWESOME. I carry one always, and when mouching the saw is perfect for cutting hazel beansticks,snare pegs/tealers and catapult forks. All that along with a blade , can opener, blah blah in a small package.

I know they are light and easily fit in a pocket but my experience of wire saws is that they are a waste of time and money. I've ditched all mine and replaced them with folding pruning saws that are also light and portable and do a much better job.

Had a few wire ones.

They work well for a few cuts then blunt or snap.

What about a modified chainsaw blade/chain. Would only cut in one direction but it won't snap

Like OctopusPrime, I have not had much joy with these saws. I would suggest that you follow OpSec's advice and buy a folding pruning saw.

Alternatively, if you can afford it, buy a Leatherman Wave. I have been using the saw on it (as well as the other tools) for years and I have never had a problem - it is surprisingly strong and durable.
