Long term storage and bleach don't mix well.
Better to store Sodium hypochlorite, comes in granules or tablets and is the stuff that they make bleach from in factories (its also used as pool-shock, which is the easiest way to buy it). Mix a small quantity up as directed and use as bleach, a little goes a long way ...... Remember to only store it as directed to on the packaging as it can be nasty stuff.

UV works best in clear water....Apart from that I know nothing about it

During the last bird flu scare, I emailed all of the leading super markets asking what the actual concentration of their bleach was. All that replied said that they did not recommend their bleach for water purification purpose, because of the additives put into it, like thickners, perfume, stabilisers etc..

I don't think Scatts replied, but they were the only local supplier of 10 percent bleach for decontamination purposes. at that time Virkon was the only disinfectant DEFRA recommended for bird flu decontamination, but on further inquiry they said that it was not recommended for use on human skin.

I looked at UV devices online and came to the conclusion (depending on a number of factors such as power of the device) that it was not foolproof and gave up on the idea of purchasing one. Does anyone have a comment about their use?

The higher power domestic wands seem to work well to kill germs and dust mites on surfaces and bed linen, but I haven't got any way of testing how well they work with water. There are some which are specially designed for water germ killing, but that's not including removal of heavy metals and other chemical nasties which can only be done with a specialist filter.

Then maybe the specialist filters will remove the bugs as well.

Milton is good for quite a few things including water sterilization quote from there website

If you are suspicious about the water - either when you are abroad or because of a supply problem - treat it with Milton to make it safe to drink. Use half a teaspoon (2.5 ml) of Milton Sterilising Fluid to 5 litres of water and leave to stand for 15 minutes before drinking.

On a monthly basis i use bleach to disinfect a 100Gal tank, the water comes from a River. I filter it through a millbank bag first then treat it. I use this for drinking/washing etc.....
Every week though i use a normal tap supply, this just gives me peace of mind that the bleach method works.
When Bleach runs out though and there are no taps, its gonna have to be Boiling or SODIS.
