Up until today I thought there's only CB and after reading about it I realised there is also Ham/Amateur radioZai wrote:AFAIK, CB is dead. Maybe try amateur radio?

Re: CB radio
Have a look for MIDLAND ALAN 42 MULTI HANDHELD, this is a 80ch+ handheld that converts to use in the vehichle, i have two, they are really nice to have with a simle 3.5" mag mount to chuck in for an impromptue convoy.
If you are looking for a small in car set for the money you cant go far wrong with a INTEK M 100 PLUS MULTI about £60.
I'd say go 80 chanel as the first 40 are lovingly known as 'The muppets' this in my oppinion is because of who is on them, i cant let my boys use the first 40 for all the swearing drunks!
Second hand is ok, ebay is one place, but be careful to buy sets that have not been opened up, there are alot of people who think its a good idea to twiddle with stuff to 'enhance' performance, this is not goo.
CB is a great start into radio, with the right conditions it is very effective, i've experienced driving past reigate on the M25 on a standard Kernow BETA 4100, with no burner/amp and talking to a guy in spain.
Antenna wise, the higher the better if base station, on a car, body/gutter mount is best, but a good magmount will work very well, best place for it is the center of the roof.

That's a lot of money to spend on CB kit, you could buy 20 CB for for that but if it works for you great.munchh wrote:Have a look for MIDLAND ALAN 42 MULTI HANDHELD, this is a 80ch+ handheld that converts to use in the vehichle, i have two, they are really nice to have with a simle 3.5" mag mount to chuck in for an impromptue convoy.

If you grab the kit in the last minute you can get some great deals, I picked up 8 CB's for £20 for the lot, then cleaned them up and sold them for more. You really don't get many people on CB at all, and even if loads of people started buying them the range is fairly poor.

Re: CB radio
Never been able to find a handheld 80 channel cb for less than £60 on EBay, second hand or otherwise!
Next time you have some to sell Metatron - give me a shout!

Re: CB radio
Yeah will do. One thing to note is they should be treated and thought of as short range comms, yes on a clear winter night, if you are on the south coast up on the cliffs and you have a CB with SSB you can contact parts of France, but realistically we are talking 4 miles on normal 4Watts FM and with SSB maybe 8 to 10 miles.Reservior wrote:Never been able to find a handheld 80 channel cb for less than £60 on EBay, second hand or otherwise!

Yeah your quite right, i have bought many for less, but then it sounds like you know what you are doing, the biggest mistake ive found with friends that are new to it is that they think its just plug and play, but with second hand stuff as i'm sure you know that can be a bit hit and miss.
I've been lucky with my Midland 42 multi's, i got both for less than £50, a first gen and a second gen with all the euro freq's on, there are a surprising amount of people still out there, there are various forums.
Maycom have always made a handheld, and there are now a few others, but your quite rite, it really should be seen as short range.
A must with all this is a half decent SWR meter, zetagi do a nice small cheap one.

Re: CB radio
I'm liking these Midland 42's because they are very small and versatile - could be fitted in the car or used as handheld, take AA batteries and have a lot of accessories. Now just need to find them somewhere cheap becasue the best price I could find is £98. That's a lot for a CB. Munchh you aren't buy any chance looking to sell yours, do you? Pretty please...
I will also eventually get a SSB CB but this will be used at home as base along with a Ham. Couple it with a solar panel and a long antenna I'm sorted come teotwawki.

Re: CB radio
Put a search in ebay and save it and tell it to email you.
There are no second hand ones on there at the min, but hang in the for on.
Of all the cbs i have these i will always keep for all the reasons you say above, they do everything you need apart from ssb.
The maycom versionalso has the car kit and is normaly cheaper.

Re: CB radio
Idiot question. I know the radio unit will need power, but will CB still work in a SHTF situation ?.
