Re: Optimus Crux / Jetboil Alternative
Hi Guys and Gals,
I have a Jotboil, and I love it! I treat it like an outdoor kettle however, so hot water for drinks, packeted soup etc, but not for cooking. (Only slight frustration is that it only contains a 100ml gas can - in an ideal world I'd love it to hold a 220! But its a small point)
I have read a lot about 'wood gas' stoves, but I cant figure out exactly what this is. I have a biolite, which I am still unsure about, having only fired it up on my balcony and not in the field. Does wood gas refer to a product or a generic class, which includes BioLite?
Another alternative to a jetboil is the MSR Reactor. I think its more efficient, according to some fairly good comparison videos with the jetboil, But that budget AlpKit / BruKit one for 35 look amazing! I am a bit frustrated I haven't heard of this before! That said, I got a good deal on a nearly new Jetboil Flash on eBay (the only piece of kit I have bought second hand) so really shouldn't complain.
Oh one frustration, I dropped the packed up Jetboil in my bedroom and cracked the cup bit that covers the heat exchanger! I have taped it together, to continue using it to protect the heat exchanger, but the cup as a cup is useless, and they cost a tenner to replace! Grrr
Regards,
Winkle
P.S. I have said before and will say again, the ultimate stove to have for fuels (as opposed to wood) is the Primus Omni Fuel. Not the Multi Fuel (The Bushcraft Store - TBS - only sells the multi, which is a shame for them really). I have two Omni fuels, and it is my favourite bit of kit, yes you sometimes have to service it, not something to worry about with a jetboil types, but it will keep on going, and burn absolutely anything - except wood! By any measure it is the AK of stoves, hence my picture!

Re: Optimus Crux / Jetboil Alternative
Wood gas stoves run on wood that is 'Gasified' using some kind of dark alchemy based on heat and control of the draft.
Basically the volatile liquids in the wood are vapourised and burnt (turning the wood to charcoal) then the remains (the charcoal) are burnt....... Same process as a properly tended woodfire but with less maintainance and a much smaller fuel payload needed for total combustion
ETA the Bio-lite is a form of gasifier, however it uses a powered fan for the draft.
I think that takes away from one of this type of stoves main strengths..... Simplicity
A brief flex of my google throws up this How-To.
