Hello from Jack Tar

Post by Jack Tar »

Some years ago, after I sussed that survivors of a nuclear war would probably starve, I began to double up on tins of baked beans in the pantry. Since then I have become very interested in this subject and am anxious to learn more.

first question is ..... have you eaten all of the beans yet ?

in my house even though we cook everything fresh most days and grow our own we seem to go through over 50 cans of baked beans per year !!

read the forum, theres so much good stuff here, ask as many questions as you like, you'll get answers maybe not all will suit you but some will.

let us know what exactly your prepping for and you'll get a better response.

Thank you. I have since found that tinned baked beans three years past their sell-by date are still edible but have a slight metallic taste.

A lot of tinned stuff is good for well past its 'best before' date. Even some non tinned stuff, I've had Pepperami's that were a couple years out of date, noodles, all sorts, do your own research on what you eat and store. I've found UHT milk (semi skimmed) lasts about 6 months past its date where I store it, it still gets the sniff test though.

Tried tinned tomatoes and other tinned veg, but they are bulky, expensive, and have a short life. I think it is their acidity which corrodes the steel of the can. So I will come out in spots, scurvy even, whenever.

The secret with tinned food is to eat it. So many preppers buy tins for ‘emergency storage’, because it lasts, but they don’t really like it! Tinned tomatoes for instance, we go through a minimum of four a week, so we have built a rotating stock of at least 60 tins. The old saying, ‘Store what you eat, and eat what you store’ is what you remember when stocking up.

An alternative to the tinned tomatoes is passata, Like Jansman with the tins, I go through a couple cartons of it a week. 35p for half a litre from Aldi/Asda.

As an aside, with your handle are you ex Navy ? We had an alternative name for the tinned toms. ;)
