I used to keep Orpingtons, they are a very large breed and lay well to good for both the table and eggs. If you have the space.

Someone commented that one of our dogs is particular
a) has a lovely glossy coat
b) is overweight
Yep, that's right. We sometimes get 5 eggs a day from our ducks
Shockingly we can go one or two days without any
Duck eggs are my favourite, although I am partial to my 'three eggs on toast' from the quail

Used to have hens few years ago, breed was 'bluebell' good layers and friendly too, until something got inside the coop one night and slaughtered the lot, would love to have them again though, if of course you have a cockerel, then you have a constant supply of eggs and replacement chicks for when its time to go in the oven...

Re: Hens,eggs and all that
I am thinking of getting a couple of chickens but not sure still.
I do keep a ton of eggs on my shelves do you know you can keep eggs for a very long time. I dont do anything to mine at the moment at they keep for mths on my kitchen shelf but if you coat them in Vaseline or lard etc they will keep for a year or more. I have done that and they do keep. will be doing it again soon as I start to can and get myself ready for any goings on.

Re: Hens,eggs and all that
Have just made some pickled eggs as another way to preserve eggs when there is too many to use, all I have to do is keep my sons off them till they're ready, I like to leave them at least a month to "mature".
Re: Hens,eggs and all that
We'd love to keep chickens. Are they noisy animals, would they attract much attention?
We have lots of room and only have neighbours on one side and the garden backs on to farmland.

Don't get a boy! Just start with three girls, don't attempt one of the rare breeds as they can be 'difficult' and to start you really just want an easy ride. The girls are only noisy when they've laid an egg (telling the cock that they're ready for his attentions againSteve20vt wrote:We'd love to keep chickens. But they are lovely and the eggs taste delish
