Sawyer water filter

Post by jansman »

I did not want to hijack bikerjoe83's thread about filter bottles. There was mention more than once about the Sawyer mini filter. I looked on Amazon, and it looks rather interesting. I could really use this on my pike fishing trips. I take as little gear as possible, as I have to walk in from the car, and water is heavy.
So can any of you give me the lowdown on this piece of kit? What I saw on Amazon was a little confusing as there seems to be variations on the theme. Thanks in advance.

I have 4 of them, got a bulk deal on the US amazon site and they cost me the equivalent of £11 each including postage from the states :D

3 are stashed away and the fourth one I have used a few times, but in all honesty it's not the type of thing that gets regular use, but its easy enough to use, seems to filter out everything leaving good clean/clear water which tastes of ..... water ;)

Never been ill after using it, although the water I have filtered has always been from small flowing streams, I've never really wanted to test it on standing water/stagnant pond, especially when there are so many running water sources around anyway.

I have a couple of tbem, they do work well, just dont let any water remaining inside the filter freeze while your out & about in the winter time as it will damage the filter & compromise its filtering ability.

I've not got one, but everything I've read (on other prep and backpacking sites) agrees that the Sawyer mini is one of the best in its class.

Basically, other filters will out perform it in Size/weight, Durablity, Filtration, Lifespan or Cost. But the Sawyer is best overall (according to several people whos opinions hold weight with those online communities)

I've seen them setup as inline, straw, squeeze and 'base-camp' style gravity bulk filters..... So, versatile

Amazon has them for £25 ATM, shop around but don't pay more then that
