Hi all - bit of a touchy subject this but i have been following backyardbowyer on youtube and followed his 100 lb crossbow plans here it is so far !!
My brother in law has said that this wasnt good enough and a borrowed his sanders and sanded it down yet a gain, and may i say he was right !!
Next i need to source some hardwood dowel to make the trigger mechanism and prod attatchment ..
Then i need to find some 1 1/4 " waste pipe to make the pvc prod..
Will post more as i do it !

Have you looked at this

am really tempted to try as the cost is a couple of quid for a pvc pipe. Just thought I add to the thread if not relevant sorry.

Re: home made crossbow
i thought that too !!! but as i am not working at the moment, i try do do things "on the cheap" i found that if you make a crossbow its more cost effective with buying ready made bolts because they are shorter than longbow bolts and if you watch how to make bolts on you tube you can get more for your money out of a length of hardwood dowel ( and duct tape) the 2x4 came from a building site at the end of my street and they have promised me all the left over pvc pipe too ! so far its cost me nothing !!by montys footman » Sat May 11, 2013 7:25 am

Re: home made crossbow
What kind of lockwork are you going to be using?
If you ask me really nicely I'll make you a proper string

Yep, trigger and related bits is your lockwork.
Never seen that one before.... Learn something new everyday
I'm so glad its not a Rising-peg lock, those have a horribly heavy trigger pull and you can't lighten it without making the weapon unsafe
Personally I go with the Nut lock, but you need to cut accurate mortises for that
When your prod is finished let me know.

Re: home made crossbow
I watched a few of this guys videos after seeing him linked here and I noticed in one video he says that it is very hard to obtain the schedule 40 pvc pipe outside the USA. That being of the suitable wall thickness pipe. (3/4 inch inner with a wall thickness taking the outside diameter to just over 1 inch)
Now I have been experimenting with pvc for entirely different types of projects and seeing as I had some various sizes of pipe laying around, decided to measure them, and yes all were very much thinner than the USA schedule 40.
As I understand from a quick internet search, you can buy the appropriate thickness of pipe, if you hunt around, but at extremely high price here in the uk.
So does anyone know where it is possible to buy the equivelant of USA schedule 40 pvc pipe in the uk at a reasonable price?
I have never seen any pvc pipe of that thickness in places like B&Q or Wickes.

Yes its pretty expensive
wall diameter of schedule 40 1"1/4 pipe is 0.14 inches = 3.55600 millimetres WOW thats thick
looked on the web the cheapest uk equivalent is
http://www.wickes.co.uk/invt/160073 but its no way as thick as the schedule 40 but cheap enough to try.. what about cutting a slice out of another piece and slide it down inside the outer this should make the wall thicker ??? any ideas
