Bleach breaks down to release Chlorine gas, exactly the same way that water purifying tablets do.

Its also used in industry to treat drinking water and for washing pre-packed salads.

I've seen (somewhere on the webz) something like this based on those cups that coffee comes in (the type that make Recyclers cry)..... Going off to have a trawl for a picture
