Quail..anyone keep them?

Post by greyman »

Been looking at getting some quail,as way of stealth prepping.(cute pets for the grandchildren)
Looked into getting some chickens but space is limited and the other half doesn't want the mess.
Reading up on quail(god bless google) they can be housed in modded rabbit hutches not as messy or noisy.
Anyone keep them for eggs or food?
Cheers

I used to keep 'em in the bottom of my aviaries as they clean up spilt seed. Quiet and unassuming creatures. As a food source though, *I* would call them a non-starter. If you are talking small space then bantams would be worth a look. Our local Vicar shows them, and he gets a fair few eggs too.

We have 2 bantam wyandottes. They are great! Pretty bulletproof, friendly and lay every other day. They eat quite a lot for their size but mine are happy on grit, plate scrapings and boiled up vegetable peelings. Would really recommend them!

I used to keep quite a few Japanese quail.
Relitively hardy.
Must be kept clean and dry.
Lots of eggs.
Meats ok.
Can be noisy .... quite a distinctive call.
