Hi all wee post about the above product , have been deliberately keeping stuff out of date to see how long it "survives" and if edible.
So date expired in June 15 .
Kept in pantry ,on shelf , dry , with other tinned and packet goods
So opened the packet and looked
No strange smells
No creepy crawlies
Sieved into a glass bowl to inspect
Nothing unusual seen
So went for it as per instructions
And out of over came a very nice loaf
Taste test :-
Yummy .
So bread mix from asda
Kept and still useable after a year .

The only thing in there likely to go off in those conditions over that time is the yeast, and given they've probably used dried yeast, not even that, so much...
Re: Asda White Bread Mix
Thanks! Handy to know seeing as bread is one of the things we would miss if there was a shortage. Now to learn to make my own...

That's good to know, Her Maj does a fair bit of baking and when I've suggested upping her stores but her argument against is the longevity of the flour. I've told her about freezing etc but she's not keen, this will give me a different angle.

As I understand it, flour kept dry and cool and dark and away from air and sources of critter (like sachets of bread mix) will last for a good long while. And cool and dark isn't that important.

I once had a bag of flour , if I recall correctly it was either wholemeal or rye flour, but whatever it was it was seventeen years out of date. No creepy crawlies , smelt and looked ok and once baked into a sort of biscuit tasted ok too but I was the only one prepared to try itwomble wrote:As I understand it, flour kept dry and cool and dark and away from air and sources of critter (like sachets of bread mix) will last for a good long while. If using out of date bread mixes, some rise and some do not depending on the store conditions it is always a good idea to boost out of date bread with half a teaspoon of in date yeast that usually does it and also in date stuff even gives it a better rise
