I have a 1997 Cherokee w/200k+ on the clock and not a hint of a problem with the automatic gearbox or engine. I have had the manual gear box on a Cherokee and find the automatic better for normal driving, as in 99% of the time being spent on dry pavement.

All problems have been with other systems such as normal replacement of brakes, brake lines, hoses, window motors and such as they gave up from normal wear.

It has been retired for occasional use on outings, pulling trailers, and the odd blizzard we get here, replaced with a FWD Ford Escape of newer vintage and better mileage as a daily driver.
