So the wife has had 10 grand given to her as an early part of her inheritance, the mum-in-law knows we want a 4x4 for more than one reason.
We are stuck between the Nissan Patrol and the Mitsubushi Shogun.
whatever we go for must be an auto-box as the Mrs fancies an auto
Could I ask the assembled brains for their thought on the pros & cons of either, or any other large (7 eater +) that we may not have thought about.
I personally fancy a Land Rover but I do hear some horror stories about them and laying under a motor is a thing I'm a little past these days.
Thanks for any input, we ain't buying for 3 weeks.

Re: Not sure which would make the better BOV
The most expensive car for parts I ever had was a Mitubishi Shogun, insane prices for even the most basic of non service items, such as an air sensor for the fuel injection system, Dealer listed at £287. 6 inch long plastic and rubber door trim £66. And my mates Shogun Pinin rotted out from underneath him, it looked perfect on top but the chassis rotted away.
Oh FYI apparently a lot of grey import shoguns from asia often see their very expensive fuel injector pumps fail as our green type diesel is different to what is used in some asian countries and our fuel kills the seals and bearings.

Have you discounted the Toyota land cruiser, they are supposed to be insanely reliable?

How much of the 10k do you want to spend and what role will the 4x4 be fore filling prior to Teotwawki?
How many miles a year, any preference petrol/ diesel/ gas? Does it have to do heavy duty towing at any point?

Preppergb, the land cruiser could be in the frame, thanks for the heads up.
Preparedsurry. the whole 10 grand for the right 4x4.
My wife has not been good in small, low cars since we had a transit rear end us on the M25, she did however feel safe in my own transit.
Our weekly travel is circa 100 miles max so not much fuel costs to worry about.
Now we know my grandson likes camping and the granddaughter is keen to get in on the fun we need something which will take 4 of us + the gear and nibbles
The wife ain't keen on towing but I shall insist on a towing hitch, when and if the SHTF then I care not that doctor says I can't drive ! I shall be making a box trailer in the hope it never gets used for what it was designed for (Not to self, take my trailer frame off the 'to skip pile in my drive )
Got to be diesel though.
Cheers,

I had a HD towbracket fitted to my old Transit so i could bolt a large metal cargo box to it, that's where i kept the gas bottles, spare wheel, hook up cables, sand / mud matts, spare jerry can etc, basically keeping all of the nasty stuff out of the van itself
Re: Not sure which would make the better BOV
Just seen a rather nice land cruiser on a 54 plate.
7 K and just what we seem to be needing.
If my wife put the nasty stuff in a trailer then she's be putting me in there
Still can't get one for 3 weeks but 4x4 porn is rather good way to pass the time

Why not go for a test drive at the dealers in one, they are quite a big vehicle so can take a little adjusting to.
You've a bit higher price range than I'm familiar with anymore so can't be too much help sorry. I think YorkshireAndy? was saying how good his Patrol was.

Honda CRV the 4x4 of choice in Central Asia - the most reliable, apparently.
Re: Not sure which would make the better BOV
Featherstick, I can see how they are liked for their MPG but 5 seats is 2 too few for our bug out plans if we ever needed that option.
