Toiletries

Hi all,

I know that in the event of an Event this seems somewhat of a luxury, but some bits are a necessity.

So, far, (and this will not be needed by everyone), I have got washable sanitary pads, soap nuts and learning which herbs work well with washing.

What are people considering for toilet paper? Washable, or natures own?

The situation will dictate the bog roll, if I'm at home I'll use the proper stuff. When I'm camping/walking I use the proper stuff too but if I was away long enough and I ran out then it's improvise, adapt and overcome.

One of the reasons I always like to have a wee pack of tissues on me is if I need emergency bog roll.

An 'arse rag' is also an option, you can use your imagination or Google it..

We keep LOTS of loo roll in the loft, enough for at least 2 years I recon. Its probably acting as loft insulation we have so much.
Plus we have about 1000 of those small white tabs which expand into a flanel sized towel when you wet them.
Plus quite a few packs of wet wipes.
Plus a LOT of old newspapers in the shed.

Guess what we are paranoid about?

Seriously though, We have been to places where loo roll is scarce or non existent and it is no fun I can tell you, actually it can be a major health hazard especially in an emergency scenario.

E Coli spreads very easily;

Arwen, too true! Loved the comment about lift insulation. Have to you had any issues with mice using your attic stock as bedding?

I have never heard of expanding tabs! Do you have a link, please?

The hygiene issue is a huge one. Even if you can find a water source to wash your hands, it is reintroducing pathogens back into that water source.

There was an article in The Independent in 2017 "Stop using toilet paper and use wet wipes instead, say Doctors".

I like to have some in 'stepping out' gear, I keep some in my mess tins and keep more in my personal dhoby gear. They weigh next to nothing and don't exactly take up much space. If you're careful they can be reused too, very handy, while I hadn't joined the dots to think of them as a 'back end boodgier' it would have fallen into the 'improvise, adapt and overcome' category. ;)

We rotate the attic stock quite regularly and haven't seen any evidence of nesting mice etc. The wet wipes alternative is a problem as they dont disintegrate I believe, so they block up the system downstream at the sewerage plant. In an emergency OK who cares, but on a day to day basis I dont think they are a good choice. Thanks for posting the link Deeps.

Some of the wet pipes are ok, I saw a programme where they tested various brands to see which ones break down, the andrex washlets are ok and the asda equivalent I use are also ok, some are not, and some of the ones that aren't say they are. You can test the ones you have by sticking them in a bowl of water and giving them a stir after half an hour or so, the ones that fall to bits are fine to flush.

On the subject of the compressed things, when Poundland have their camping stuff in during summer they have Jcloths in compressed individually wrapped tablets, they're exactly the same as the UST ones that you get from camping suppliers but much cheaper, I have them knocking about all over the place as they're handy to have around. Different to the little white ones but for a different purpose.
