security hardening a metal garage door

Post by hedgerowpete » Mon Jan 14, 2019 8:31 pm

I like a lot of people have a metal up and over garage door. These are very easy to break through.
1, aim for the single lock pin or the side lock pins
2, break the spine of the door by lifting the unsecured bottom half against the top half thats locked
3, reverse a car into it
4, do a Michael Cane to it

now whilst there is not alot you can do against 3 and 4

one and two are a lot easier to have go at

to reinforce the locking pins you need to add strength to the door and a more robust pin and spring system.

to prevent the door being attacked the idea i had was to add some strength to the sides to prevent it being folded out against the strength of the new lock bolts

what i wanted to do was to add some aluminium sides to the door edge and strengtheners to the door skin to help it along the way. if posible if it could also have some form of angle shape then even more strengh is produced.
heres my door now

tiny rivets are all thats visable on the outside and these have been painted as well

Image an aluminium z profile from work in alli riveted to the inside edge

full length to aid strengh

Image
reinforcement plates to help the stronger roller pin fixed in place before the extra side piece

Era did do a set of 2 mortice locks to secure bottom corners
Here's a similar item

Obviously the tin might need a Decent spreader plate ...

Others are a bit more obvious (but the ohhh look big visible lock something worth pinching

As for the ram a driveway post might be a option...

A viper type shock sensor each side on the frame will often activate the alarm mid attack and a magnetic door switch at the bottom linked into a alarm system

You'll never make them 100% secure but you can slow them up

depending on how much extra weight you plan on adding it might be a good idea to have a spare set of springs to hand , just in case .

Has some scrote climb onto the wheelie bin to get onto to the roof.......

Now old asbestos sheet is known to be a bit brittle... It gave way at the end where his work bench was leaning on the bench was a row of brooms / long handled tools.... Well without putting too finer point on it someone must have been hurt when they landed on them tip if the shaft first 2 broken handles later .... They never came back

If, like most people with garages, driveways and cars, The car stays outside in the drive. The car can be reversed up to the garage door to prevent entry.

I fitted a pair of security bolts like these https://www.amazon.co.uk/Schlosser-Tech ... olts&psc=1 to the bottom of my garage door. They do the job and only require 6 holes to be drilled.
