Rogue Male by Geoffrey Household

Post by General DeGaulle »

Who has read this? I have had this book since I was 11, and have re-read it many times. It has it all - remaining inconspicuous, gathering supplies, aquiring survival gear, and a big part of it is about 'bugging out'. Although written in 1938, I reckon this book is what instilled in me the prepping mentality.

Yep thats the one! Its about a 'British chap' who falls foul of both the Nazis and the British police (He tries a pot-shot at Hitler before the war started, thus making him a wanted man both in Germany and Britain). his adventures involve escaping from authority, stowing away on a ship, wearing disguises, hiding from - well, everyone - befriending a cat, and gathering supplies, survival gear and making his own weapons. Good stuff! The second half of the novel, which mainly centres around his hideout and evading enemies, is particularly riveting.

He was one of my dad's favourite authors and I have some of his books. A Time to Kill, Rough Shoot, and Rogue Male are all good. He comes over as a really nice man and he definitely knew the countryside. I love how he buried the cat with a tin of bully beef to tide him over until he learned the movements of game in his new terrain

The Radio 4 Extra adaptation was very good, definite worth a listen if only for the 1930's bug out vehicle. Gripping story line throughout.
