Who will rebuild? And with what....

Post by DundeePrepper »

So SHTF 30% survived.. what next?

So we need skilled tradesman carpenters, mechanics etc to form communities along with farmers, medics, teachers etc... and I'm sure communities will begin to form, I think the majority will end up populating small outskirt villages: near fields for farming etc..

But what tools will be available assuming there is no electricity?

I came across this article - interesting reading from say a carpenters POV but the site in general is interesting... looking at low tech options - maybe of use to us preppers..

http://www.lowtechmagazine.com/2010/12/ ... hines.html

Anyways thought I would share it...

Cheers

Mike

Edit: While I'm at it... http://www.lowtechmagazine.com/2013/08/ ... power.html BRILLIANT :D

One of the best skills a prepper can have is being able to do things without power and modern conveniences.

Practise them now, gather the equipment and resources you will need. Learn, make mistakes and relearn.

My OH is already using as many hand tools as he can, has learnt green woodworking. He is gaining the skills.

Also collect books that tell you how to do things the 'old fashioned' way.

I think that maybe we'll go back a bit; people won't specialise so much but will be able to do a bit of everything they need. There will be specialists, but not so much as now.

As part of working where I was in the summer, I did a great deal of research. One of the things I found out is that one person knew how to do a lot of things. The average man could hunt, build, plough, make tools, all he needed to care for his family. Women would spin, weave, dye, cook, tan etc. Whilst jobs were more gender specific, one person could do more than the average 'modern' human, because there weren't really specialists in those times. It all meant that if you dropped the average modern man and the average iron age man on an uninhabited island, I know who I'd put my money on to survive!

When my parents first moved into the village, the local builder also did undertaking as had his father before him

My old boss's father (who was also a smith) remembered his master pulling teeth

My OH not a Prepper and I've never really discussed it with him.. Is a Joiner/Locksmith and is more than capable of building a house from nothing but trees.. but where is the iron monger, for nails etc.. and who's prepping to keep a farm viable to support a small community..

So maybe I'm just thinking into this too much as there isn't really much we can do now to prep for this eventuality.. But it concerns me.. how many farmers out there could grow/cultivate etc without tractors and combine harvesters are the skills still in existence on a wide enough scale?

I'm not big on the end of the world scenarios but I certainly believe we could end up in a situation where there are no utilities, no central government and no true law and order..

Doom and Gloom Eh?

And breath There are more people out there than you think that know how to do things the old fashion way. They are called every thing from anoraks, hobbyist, re enactors (found at country fairs) crafters and other such names. Most will survive and will be people you would not think of as having anything to offer until they mention there little hobby :D

Time to panic is when the 30% that are left are those without any skills , when all the engineers , builders , farmers and technicians are lying dead in the gutters. So junmist is right in what he says.
I've visited low tech many times and I think it's on there that a bigger problem than the lack of skilled people is the lack of things like draught horses , we only have a fraction of the numbers we would need to replace tractors. However, there's still no need to panic. The oil isn't going to disappear over night and a long slow decline will give us time to adapt.
