Well, it depends on how much you'd like to spend.

I have some very nice knives which cost a fair few quid but I always seem to end up with a good old Alox Swiss Army Knife (a Farmer or a Pioneer) in my pocket.
Very reasonably priced and tough as boots. Non locking though.

If your'e after a lock knife then Spyderco do gazillions of em. I have a Tenacious which is astoundingly good for the price..

I keep pimping these guys
http://www.ffx.co.uk as I like their pricing policy
I've bought Hultafors knives from them (http://www.ffx.co.uk/tools/refine/-/1/2), the Heavy Duty (which is a beast) and the Craftsman..... Great knives and cheaper then dirt (or should I say "Inexpensive" ?)
They stock Victorinox if you're looking for a SAK

I also like Opinel (the #8 is an ideal size for my hands), good steel, plain handle and a simple lock........They also don't look tacticool at all, and as such are less scary to John Q. Public.

Anything from Benchmade or Spyderco for folding blades, Sog for fixed blades.

Morakniv make very good quality knives, i own this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mora-Companion- ... s=morakniv

It's never let me down, it has 3/4 tang, so if the handle did ever come off, you could wrap paracord around the tang, and it would still be useful, if you want to spend a bit more, this is an even better one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/MORAKNIV-HEAVY- ... s=morakniv

Just check their reviews if you don't believe me on how good they are :D

Yep its my Gerber Prodigy feels very solid in the hand but has sat in my drawer unused since I bought it, and TBH I would not have bought it if I had got my £14 mora first, its a gorgeous bit of kit but cant see me using it, I just fondle it occasionally :D
