I've had the SP191 on my Amazon wishlist for a while. It's pricey but if it does what it says on the tin then I think it would be worth it.

Nope, not with removing viruses. They're too small. Carbon can filter out the larger stuff like giardia and cryptosporidium but not viruses. It can also absorb *some* chemicals but definitely not heavy metals.

But the future is graphene filters! https://phys.org/news/2016-03-revolutio ... risis.html Removes viruses and desalinates sea water. Bet they'll sell like hot cakes when they arrive on Amazon! :D

They do look the mutts nuts, think it might be a few years before they hit 'da streets', at least at a reasonable price. Without trying to tempt anyone to risk it, we do seem obsessed with how clean the water is, perfectly understandable I guess but we've drank the stuff for years, of course brewing is another way to make the stuff drinkable...

I heard one of the scientists behind graphene on the radio a few weeks back. Apparently the filter sheets can be set\aligned to be able to filter alcohol out of any drink.

Hi all,
I'm so confused. The Sawyer gizmo's sound incredible.
These water filtration systems are basically filling up a 25litre bucket and the gizmo cleans the dirty water and make it safe to drink?
One of the gizmo's is claiming I can get 1,000,000 litres of clean water?
So if I have read right, for my situation, I can use my 90 days of bottled water (i'm only prepping for 90 days) but if SHTF longer than my 90 day water supply I can take this 25 litre bucket to my nearby deep well / river every day and have fresh clean drinking water? That's 228 years of clean water based on my needs assuming my river doesn't run dry / contaminated!
Please say yes.....!!!!

Yes :D

But, if the water source has other pollutants, ie. Chemical or heavy metals. I'm not sure if it will do the business.
I'm sure someone with a better understanding will come along and answer.
I have 2 sawyer minis, and If I remember rightly they do approx 300,000 ltrs each. You do need to backwash them to keep them clear of particles.
My water preps are 180ltrs in 20 ltr cans, 40 ltrs in 2 ltr bottles, loads of puri tabs, 2 sawyer minis and the ability to boil.

Yes....but that "contaminated" word is to be borne in mind. In fairness you'll be drinking chemicals/heavy metals if you use the purifying tablets or boiling too as they don't get rid of such things either. That said if no-one's fixed society in 228 years, you've probably got other things to worry about than a bit of lead poisoning...! Oh...and the bucket one doesn't actually include the bucket, just the filtration bit...you need to provide your own bucket. :D

Yes...and humans have died in their thousands drinking it when it wasn't clean. Take just the Cholera bacterium. Thanks to John Snow (not to be confused with Jon Snow!) we now know why 616 people died in the 1854 Cholera outbreak in London. If there had been just one Sawyer Mini attached to the water pump on Broad Street, none of those 616 people would have died (well, not of Cholera). In Britain today getting something like Cholera from a water supply (river, stream, lake) is unlikely (but not impossible), but in a post SHTF situation, statistically the odds of Cholera in particular rise dramatically as sanitation levels drop. Without immediate antibiotics and rehydrating fluids Cholera can kill you within hours of infection. It lives in the soil as well as in rivers and lakes. It can also be spread via food that has been contaminated. It's a nasty little bacterium, feared throughout the world. As you say, best not to risk it.
