re - Breathability : about 10 years ago the German army surplus Gore was very good on the breathability front.

There are many grades of Gore these days with ratings of water passage per sq. metre. I found a good gauge of the waterproofing/breathabilty factor was looking at breathable chest waders used in fishing, particularly salmon fishing. The salmon fly fishing market is often aimed at the big spenders who will pay for the very best. Or what they are told is the best by Hardy et al.
Airflo in wales make some good breathable clothing that they rate in a similar way to Gore. May be a useful way to get a cross-ref. May....
