Geiger counters

Post by Pete_59 »

In view of the news about the radio active cloud of Iodine-131 spreading across Europe and the on-going Fukushima disaster I've been considering buying a Geiger counter.

So the questions are, has anyone already got one they can recommend and/or can anyone give advice as to what type I need to get?

I have been looking on ebay for a few weeks and the only units under several hundred pounds seem to be ex soviet models that of course measure roentgens (sp?) not sieverts or rads or rens or western units so would need a conversion charts.

I heard today that the source may be a hungarian research or reactor and that the spread is through the network of natural gas pipes throughout the EU and even UK. What can we do about it ? I dont know other than to take iodine supplements or potassium iodide if possible to load the thyroid to avoid further uptake. This may be too late though as the event may have been in january. Theres also the abandoned US reactor at Camp Century in greenland...oh, joy, joy, happy joy :?

Of course the ex MOD dosimeters are much cheaper and available but give a retrospective reading so are of less protective use. I still have my comedy NBC suit from army days and they are bugger all use.

What news is this?
The radiation monitoring maps available online show nothing unusual, and the only reports I can find with a google search are from the likes of Sputnik news, global research.ca and infowars, these are not reliable sources of information, do you have a link to a credible news source?

There is masses on youtube, masses...some bullshit, some more credible . And all the mapping has gaps in the timelines as sensors have been turned off during events. Which believe it or not, is the policy of all the nuclear watchdogs.

We have been fishing through this for weeks now and its takes a dozen lousy reports to find one that may be true. But there is no secret that iodine 131 has spiked and that only has a half life of 8 days. Work that one out.

YouTube also isn't a credible source of information, if anyone on there exposed some huge conspiracy that the powers that be didn't want getting out then they would disappear within minutes and the video would be taken down, YouTube is owned by one of the biggest companies out there and are just as much a part of the establishment as anything else.

I'll ask again, is there one single credible news outlet or scientific publication reporting on this? If there is then I'll believe it, if there isn't then it's nonsense.

There is a mention in a couple of papers, but not of a huge death cloud that would require anyone to do anything about it, just that there's enough to make the watchdogs suspicious as to where it came from.

Use a Geiger counter if it makes you feel safer, but I doubt there's actually anything to worry about.

If you want mainstream media, I couldnt help as I dont use it. Maybe RT ? But I dont think we are talking secret death cloud here

I agree with you about google/youtube which is why I say most is bullshit. The few videos that may be genuine are taken down very quickly, Dana Durnsford is a canadian independent reporter who has done 5 years of personal, physical research on fukashima and he mentions it occassionally.

Yeah, RT news is about as credible as infowars, it's owned by the Russian Government as a propaganda mouthpiece, so even if you believe that the mainstream news is government propaganda then RT is no better, it's just a different government!

Generally we do ask that any news such as this is supplied with some sort of link to the complete story to avoid scaremongering and inaccuracies. If you could remember this for future reference, cheers.

The best I can find is a report from 6 days ago by the Independant.

http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style ... 91886.html

'Mysterious radioactive spikes are being found across Europe – and nobody quite knows why.

Iodine-131, a man-made radioactive material, is being found in small amounts across the continent. It was found in northern Norway early in January, according to officials, but has been gradually moving across the rest of Europe ever since.

But despite finding the material in January, authorities didn’t announce that it had been found until recent days. That might be because it isn't at all clear where it has come from or how it got to be spread out.
Further information makes the find even more unusual. Iodine-131 is usually found alongside other radioactive materials, but it wasn't. And it has a short half-life – the time required for one half of the atoms of a radioactive substance to disintegrate – but a significant amount of it was found, meaning that it is likely that it was introduced very recently.

It isn't clear where Iodine-131 would ever have been released from. The US has deployed specialised planes to fly over Europe and isolate it – but have mostly failed.'

FYI- Half life of Iodine-131 is 8 days.
