Fixed Blade Recommendations

Post by mushroom »

Wondered if anyone can give any recommendations...

I'm looking for my first fixed blade knife. Up to now I have always used my Opinel (No.8 I think) and it has served me very well. I like it's size, its wooden handle and for general use it's great.

I've been getting more interested in Bushcraft recently and I think I'd like to add a fixed blade to my kit - something for camp cooking use, prepping wood etc. I need something for my small, female hands though! For preference I'm also keen on the more natural look (hence the Opinel) than the macho look!

Any suggestions? Trying to keep to a modest budget as well if poss!
Thanks

Can't beat a Mora, as a cheap reliable first choice.

Get a stainless version - it won't rust on you.

As most things, try one out first, it might not fit your hand.

I would also choose a Mora but I prefer the #1.

Hi ,I posted last week on this very topic and overwhelmingly Mora was suggested as all round value .Have been looking at the range and still deciding which to go for.

I would also recommend a Mora: http://www.springfields.co.uk/mora-comp ... knife.html A lot of the Bushcraft courses include a Mora in the course fee.

Just to be different, Hultafors Heavy Duty is worth every penny of its budget price and then some and imho so is Condor Sapiens although a lil more ££ than Hultafors or Mora it's still a tidy little knife.

Thanks all... overwhelmingly (thanks though Smudge, I will look that up too) it seems to be a Mora!

I like the birch wood handle of the No1.

Will let you know when I've made a purchase! Might have to wait until after Christmas now... but then looking outside my window for the past week or so, not much bushcrafting going on anyway... bloody awful weather!

Cheers

Mora , Hultafors. Both good and tough. And easy to keep sharp. And that isthe important thing,if it costs £100 or a tenner, if it is not sharp it is just a lump of steel.
