I don't have an issue with people not being able to carry 'big' knives, unless they've got a use for them of course but having to justify why you're carrying a pocket knife, especially when they've got a whole range of different tools etc on them just seems over kill.

Thinking about metatrons original post, I thought that (via previous arrangement) you COULD take tools, they either have to go in the hold or in the flight deck itself. But it's unwise to just turn up. Calling ahead I thought made the process easier, you have to prove that you need them etc etc but it's not insurmountable
