Unless its likely that you're both going together you need to ensure that your SOP is going to be OK.
A Will is the best way to do this (It needn't be complex, the shortest will on record was "All to son" ).

My parents did something with the ownership of their home which means that it can't be sold as part of the estate of one of them as long as the other one is alive ...... I'll have to ask what that is called.

Sod that, make a will and leave it to charity, Help for Heroes or whatever. I'm retired from nursing but have income from properties and the government still tax me, the wife is not retired but pays a rake of dosh to them so the last thing we want is to give them anymore when we shake off this mortal coil, we want the children to cop the lot :)
