Teapot makes a good point about being prepared mentally, for a lot of people who haven’t had their eye on the ball whatever happens will be massive sock to the system. Even if it isn’t something as catastrophic as the breakdown of law and order, it’ll throw their lives into complete turmoil.

I reckon lifestyles also very important, because obviously if something long term comes along, the more changes you have to make, the harder it will be to adjust.
Same- anything really, as you do start to realise you are actually hedging against a lot of possible scenario's but my expectations are financial turmoils, maybe even a breakdown of systems as countries begin to default etc., causing disruption to supplies of food or energy. There are trade wars beginning now, which could ultimately lead to real wars.

You are right that lifestyles are important. And mental attitude. We are doing the right thing, that I am sure of.

Almost anything that comes our way. Apart from total Planetary/Cosmic SNAFU's of course. In fact, asked Mrs Ogre for some soap today and discovered we'd run out. Just a quick step to our preps and there's a years soap bars stashed... Love it...

Listening to Radio 4 business news today 6.15 am an economist said a good friend at the weekend asked her"Should I be drawing cash from the bank, and stocking up on RICE AND TINNED FOOD?"

Makes you realise how shaky folks are feeling.
In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life: It goes on.

I'm prepping for terrorism (working in London), extreme weather (winter) and personal economic problems (unemployment etc.). I'm not really into SHTF scenarios, but I think you should be prepared for things less catastrophic.

Did the economist reveal what she'd told her friend?

It could just be that the economist was of a certain form of extremist ideology and wasn't just a prepper but was more off the rails.

On the run up to the 08 problems (when I wasn't sleeping and had a few health problems and was therefore not thinking in a straight line so to speak) I have had the great misfortune to be a listener to a certain conspiracy online radio show. The pundit told us to stock up on rice. I bought a few kilos of tesco value rice in a panic. i found some of it recently squirreled away in a draw that i would not use that often. I am acutely aware that it was more than 2 years past its sell by date.

Being a prepper doesn't mean that we have to go paranoid.

Jansman, SNAFU means: Situation Normal All Fu*ked Up. I know its a while ago you asked but i just saw it. However, if you knew that and your question was a bit deeper and actually meant what was meant by it, I'm sorry Ive been such a retard!

On this subject though, I prep for nothing but am prepared for everything (to an extent). I wish I knew in what form tougher times were coming but I just hedge my bets.

Also, prepping has had another fantatsic advantage as far as I'm concerned - because of sites like this my wife and I have started growing our own food, which is nice to do as a couple, rather than watching tele. Ive taken up archery, a hobby Ide never considered but has meant meeting interesting people I may never have met, my cellars a lot tidier and organised and I can now enter mastermind as a contestant, who's specialist subject is 'canned goods expiry dates' :)
