2020 - Focusing on home security -

I have relayed external concrete paths, repaired the external walls, cemented in fence posts, etc. I have measured up the fences for barbed wire and purchased this as well as enough hooks to attach it if SHTF.

I have also measured up all the windows and purchased metal poles to fit internally if SHTF. (It is a really easy process). As well as measured up cloth coverings to blackout the windows and wooden boards. I estimate if SHTF I need 3 hours to attach all bars, plants and cloth coverings.

Front garden has been dug up completely and due to windows I have placed thorn bushes below them (blackberry/raspberry mix). So they double up as both food and a level of security.

I am having the attic floored over (specialist company so it can still breath) and then having two internal walls set up in it splitting it up into three - safe sleep zone - ladder area - food storage. I also have purchased a separate ladder, if SHTF, I plan to remove the stairs (they aren't structural) and have a ladder that can only be put down from the top and raised up again.

I have managed to do all of that for <£400. So I am happy about that.

CCTV cameras, PRI sensor lights, etc, have all been tested. W

We are also contemplating remortgaging the property, separating the money across several banks and if SHTF and we have a crash, purchasing land with a farm or woods.

I have a similar setup to Lemne. 2 bed flat with a big attic and small kitchen. (And 4 adults in the family)
The attic gets the stuff that won't go over easily. Washing up liquid, laundry detergent, loo rolls, bin bags and camping kit. The lift up bed store and bottom of the wardrobe gets the long term food storage so I keep bulk dried fruit & veg, beans rice and flours under there and boxed up in the bottom of the wardrobe. Tinned fruit and evap go under the plinth in the kitchen cabinet and jams go on top of the wall cabinet.
Top of fridge has 4l size containers for bulk store foods we use all the time anyeay, rice, pasta, lentils, oats, gram flour. These are topped up from the bed store stock for easy access and to allow stock rotation.

Beware the temp changes in an attic. I've used mine but ended up shipping a lot out after measuring really high temperatures in summer.
Also watch out for critters getting to your dried stuff up there.
We have vents in the roof and are going to get some fans fitted with a switch in the bathroom. Our flat stays quite cool so can open the hatch and pull cooler air through. Most of my stuff is in sealed boxes but the new stuff I am vacuum packing where poss. Hopefully that will keep the critters out. Time will tell.

I've just had an email from work saying we will be working from home until at least the end of 2020. I need to think about how this will affect preps and if I need to change anything. First thoughts are that food wise I may save money, but I really need to think this through.

In other news, I went to see that car and I am buying it. It's a small car so I'm looking into clever storage ideas to stash stuff :)

Hyundai i10. Tiny car. I've seen a few storage ideas so I'm not too worried. :)

I had a medicine review over the phone with the nurse from my doctor earlier today and she asked me to get hold of a blood pressure monitor or go to a pharmacy that offers a blood pressure service and then call them with the reading. So I've just ordered a monitor and while I was in Amazon I got a pulse oximeter at the same time. The nurse rather suggested that face to face appointments won't be happening any time soon for anyone but urgent cases, so it makes sense to buy one. A lot of my family have high blood pressure so it'll come in handy if anyone else needs a check. I have asthma so that's why I went for the pulse oximeter too. Whenever I've end up with the asthma nurse because I've got ill, they've always stuck one on my finger, so I figured at least then I could tell them my blood oxygen if I had to have another phone appointment.

Mouse, I had to use one of those self service blood pressure monitors in a local GP surgery before a day op a few years ago - I used it 8 times in a row before I got the same reading twice    there was definitely a trick to using that one  Not a bad idea to buy your own.

When I used the one at our surgery, I handed the results to reception, and got a call from my doctor inside the hour. Technically I should have been dead! Obviously didn’t do it right. I went straight there ( 5 doors down), and found I was borderline high. Definitely a knack to using it!
In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life: It goes on.

Well if anyone's interested in getting one, I bought the OMRON M3 Intellisense currently on offer on Amazon. I checked that it's a sensible brand - you can buy exactly the same thing in Lloyds Pharmacy.

We have a machine to monitor t'other half's high blood pressure. The GP always takes the readings with a pinch of salt, even though we took it to the GP (pre covid) and got the same reading as his machine gave.
The one thing it is very good for monitoring trends i.e. Are you getting worse or better over time?
