Regarding gardening, assuming you are fairly new to it (forgive my assumption if not) then you can't go wrong with onions. A few bags of onion sets from Wilko's will set you up for a years supply of onions and only cost you around a fiver. Onions serve well to spice up any other food you have and are of course very good nutritionally. Along with your tomatoes, your 4 mnth food supply will suddenly stretch out to six!
