Any martial art improves fitness, coordination, reflexes and control. All good things if you found yourself in a self defense situation. (Control being essential.) However, as my daughter was taught in Kae Kwon Do when they did some self defense classes, the first rule of thumb is avoidance in the first place. Don't put yourself into those vulnerable situations.
