The book "One Second After" deals with this rather well. If you get a chance, read it. Its an easy read and not a huge book and it certainly make you think about how life would go on after a social/economic changing event such as that. In the UK I understand that our power system is more robust than our American and Canadian friends due to how our grid system is laid out or rather it is less susceptible to a total loss of power, though I may have got that wrong.

Awesome i will check this out.

some great feedback on here. and i would like to think i would be ok. although my biggest worry is i have young children so i also have to think about these at the same time as all the other issues. and the neighbours etc

The protagonist in One Second After is a family man, a widower after his wife's death, and it deals with the family issues in a very strong way.

Big Solar Flares happen all the Time. The Carrington Event wasn't the big one we think it is. There was a huge one in 774AD. It is better known as the Charlemagne Event:
https://phys.org/news/2012-11-sun-sourc ... event.html

Where I got the 200 year quote was from the Space Weather YouTube Page, Suspicious Observers, this is the actual video: https://m.youtube.com/watch?list=PLHSox ... ode=NORMAL

Now I have watched this channel for a good few years. I should have remembered, that most people don't follow Space Weather Channels. So using the 200 year quote was abit out of order. So I apologise for that. If you were to follow the videos that is posted everyday. You would see the effect the Sun has on the Planet, for example back in August and September 2017. When you had all those Hurricanes in the Atlantic, one day they were Run of the mill, Category 2 Hurricanes, the next they increased to 3 then 4; then in Irmas case a Category 5. Something had Supercharged them. That thing was the Sun. When their was Solar Flare after Solar Flare, this was from the Eighth of September:

This one is an update to that video posted on the 19th of October: https://m.youtube.com/watch?list=PLHSox ... ode=NORMAL

Now I'm drifting away from the main thread. This is the Video you really need to watch, this is about the Sun, Solar Flares, CME's, Coronal Holes, and this planets ability to handle them: https://m.youtube.com/watch?list=PLHSox ... VgUZv9ccyQ

It is not very reassuring.
