My work takes me to quite a few different homes and as such I encounter a number of dogs. In my experience most fall into the useless as guard dogs catagory only wanting to be friendly and fussed . There are some of course who are just the opposite , one customer has a dog that reacts only at men for instance and next doors dogs start barking as soon as I step into my own garden but by and large the majority are plasid . I've even had the odd one or two who run and hide at the sight of me and I'm not that ugly.

Not the word on the street. :o
From my limited experience I think you're right that most are crap guard dogs, I wouldn't want mine to be that territorial to be honest, although a working breed they're pets and seee people as walking vending machines.

Dogs are funny things. The Border Collie I referred to was a complete idiot with people and was a real people person and a wonderful pet. We honestly never thought she would be any good as a guard dog, that all changed when the doctor arrived to give the Brambling one of his baby development check-ups. The house was empty as we were in the garden at the time and didn't see old Dr Bone (I kid you not  ) pitch up. We heard very soon though, he had walked into the house "Gerrof you mad b*tch!" *screams* falling out the door, I'm rushing down the path baby in arms to see my daft gentle Collie had morphed into a black and white killing machine. The poor Doc had his bag between him and her trying his best to avoid the teeth. I shouted at her and in an instant she became the daft placid idiot we all knew and loved. She even rolled over at the Doc's feet for a fuss! mere seconds before she was doing her best to rip his wedding tackle off. Luckily that was before we had the Greyhound, otherwise I doubt he would have got out unscathed So I wouldn't ever write off a Dog.

Tee place I store our caravan when not in use is a working farm. They have a number of dogs, at least one of which (sheepdog/collie) is a very clever guard dog.

He/she often sleeps by the door to the office, just inside it. Apparently, if anyone is in the office & the door is open (as it often is) you can just wander in no problem. However, if no-one else is in & the dog is there, as soon as you set one leg inside the door the dog will calmly but firmly latch on to the "intruders" leg & just make it known to them that they're to proceed no further.

I haven't seen it myself but have heard about it from a couple of people...

Many years ago I had to go and mend the phone of a feller in the banking industry; specifically withdrawing money using a shotgun (I found this out later). His mrs let me in and she had two dobermans (dobermen ? nah). They were lolling about while I she was in the room but as soon as she popped out to put the kettle on they were up and watching me intently, growling when I moved. as soon as she came in with a mug of tea they were back to dopey mode.
