One thing i will say is if solar only you would be much better using a pwm ( pulse width modulation) type solar controller as they will maintain the batteries and keep them at peak charge ready for use, the other type is mppt( maximum power point tracking ) controller but you would not really benefit from this type of controller for the set up you are talking about

Wish I'd gone for a 60w or bigger but the 30w I'd adequate for running my shed and battery charging the numerous as and sas cells the kids desire

I've boosted it up today off the mains since I had the tumble drier on in there shed has no mains power so lives off 12v
Within 20 mins it (110ah battery was full)
Pull a extension cable for the tumble from the kitchen..


I've got 12v lights 2x10w floods to light outside and a 1m strip of warm white and a 2m strip of cool white inside

And my budget inverter box is what it's running off giving me mains if needed

Thanks Andy, it was supposed to be this years big project but its slipped right. We've not had a power cut in a good long while and there's an element of 'playing' but with a practical application. I'll run a shed light off it too, its something I fancy knowing. The other project is building a tandoor.

My brother in law has done it and swears by it. Plenty of inspiration on youtube, doesn't look too tricky although I daresay there will be an element of figuring times and temps out.

To go back to the solar discussion, one of the options for dealing with excess power is to heat water, there are 12V and 24V immersion elements readily available that will fit standard hot water tanks

Yep, another thing on or list is to run hot water from excess energy produced. Our system is a year or two down the road so we are in the info gathering stage atm.
