Re: Garage Fridge Freezer WARNING

Some freezers are ok for use in an outhouse (we specifically bought our Beko for this).

Re: House fire

Odd that the mains powered smokes didnt go off, they're usually more sensitive than battery ones. Have you tested them ? Good that you're all safe, that's the most important thing; houses can be replaced, people can't. It's reminded me that I must get a couple of extinguishers in from the workshop; ...

Re: Prepper -'lite' or full on survivalist

Full on survivalist, me. Got a concrete bunker with enough food for two year..... "Korolev, wake up son, time for your pills...." Sorry, I'd put myself as prepper-lite I guess; I have resources and skills to see me through medium crises like when covid first hit but in a teotwawki situatio...

Re: Best head torch on AA battery?

When you say "80%" full, how are you measuring that ? If it's by voltage (1.2v ish) then your batteries are almost done. I had a load of second hand AAs that my Mrs got from work (recovered kit had to have new batteries fitted before going back out and some of them were nearly new). I meas...

Re: Home brewing?

I got a load of brewing stuff a few years back but never used it. I recently dug it out as I wanted to make some cider from the apples from our garden*. WHAT A PULLAVER !! We spent all afternoon mashing/pulping/pressing apples and came up with a single demi john of juice which has been fermenting in...

Re: General finance planning

Pretty similar situation, we own the house and have no mortgage. No loans. Everything goes on the Sainsburys credit card, which gives us Nectar points and is paid off in full every month. Got some savings spread about in Premium Bonds and shares (had them for ages, they're performing poorly so I'm p...

Re: Future home heating

The feller that did our plumbing & boiler said he knows of people that have bought replacement boilers and put them into storage, in order to future-proof having to spend out big after 2035. The thing is people will be buying gas boilers in 2034 (not as many as now obviously) and expecting to us...

Re: Future home heating

We looked into a ground source heat pump when we had our house renovated and insulated but the initial cost was too much. We were looking at about £2k for a gas boiler, 5x that for the GSHP. Gas boilers have a life of 10-15 years so we'll stick with it for now. By the time it's knackered we will be ...
