Re: Has everyone coped with the extreme cold?>
Good test of heating in our new house. Lowest we saw was minus 12, plus 2 this morning. Combination of oil fired central heating & woodburner worked well. Extensive repairs & draught proofing since moving in have worked. Water pipe in the loft froze briefly (but not burst) so that's some mor...

Re: Community Orchards ???
There's sort of one Nearish us sort of. It's in the grounds of an old castle and the owners maintain the trees (apple only ) and the fruit is freely available to anyone who may be visiting to either pick or collect windfalls. Not a true community orchard but the privilege doesn't seem to be abused. ...

Re: Wooden or single glazing
We had single glazed wooden windows in our last house which was 200 years old. Absolutely atrocious heat retention (as you would expect). Thankfully an endless free firewood supply from tree surgeon mate. We lived there for 18 years before funds allowed getting upvc double glazing and we then realis...

Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 9
Building local relationships in our new area this morning - There was a pheasant shoot in the field opposite our house a couple of weeks ago, windy day & some of the shot landed on the house roof. I was at work and wife didn't want to go outside to talk to them. This morning a guy in a pick up w...

Re: Wind and Hydro Generators
Hi jenny, I had a mate who lived off grid and installed a small turbine about ten years ago similar (at least superficially) to the you linked to. Tbh all he had was hassle with it, bearings going, non waterproof connections in the unit. Any maintenace was made doubly hard by the fact you had to uns...
Re: Sandbags
Thanks all for your replies. I'm currently deciding what to do but I think I'll just buy some sand and store that outside, and get some Hessian bags at store them dry in my garage, and make up the sandbags if I need them. I suppose I should think about the size of the bag too. Understanding that I ...

Re: Toilets when SHTF
Ah yes, OK. I was coming at it from a different angle. Five of us in the household but in a very rural location so plenty of space to spread it about so to speak. In an urban area very different story.

Re: Toilets when SHTF
Why bury it in bin bags? Surely better to dig a hole and bury it au naturale to allow it to break down quicker? With regards to using human faeces for compost (humanure) the permaculture peeps suggest only using it for fruit trees and the like so when eating the crop you're pretty well removed from ...
