Re: Ambient Light

Very interesting. This is similar to lighting I've seen in sheds where a bottle in the roof. Light hits the water and gives good light to the interior.

Re: freeze dried foods

I would highly recommend checking out the Mormon food storage program in your area. The church has a reccomendation of storing a year of food for each person. They have canned dried beans, rice, and flour for very reasonable prices. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2528650/The-super-hoarders-...

Re: freeze dried foods

Are Mountain House meals available in the UK? These are my favorite meals for backpacking. The are freeze dried in a pouch. Remove the dessicant, add boiling water, and they're ready in 5 minutes. The are a bit pricy $7 US per meal with each meal being about 600 calories. They do keep for ages, are ...

Re: Barricading / Home fortification.

Not sure that's necessarily the case, they might be looking for the easy option but I wouldn't assume that they're automatically cowards, it wouldn't make any difference anyway if there were 5 of them and 1 of you. I completel agree. They are opportunists. I'm a firm believer in small community coo...

Re: Barricading / Home fortification.

I think one of the best defenses when concerned about looting is to engage your neighbors. This should be easier in an area that has seen rioting in the past. As others have stated looking less appealing as a target than the next place is an easier defense. I live on a cul-de-sac. Pulling our cars ...

Re: Strength and fitness

I think I'd describe myself as 'robust but chunky'. I often wonder if being on the slightly portly side would help in a genuine emergency involving food shortages. Certainly, my personal fuel tank would keep me going for quite a bit longer than others'... +1 I'm no stranger to the hot dog stand, I ...

Re: Strength and fitness

For me, functional fitness is important ,heating the house using wood, that means collecting, chopping, and splitting, working the land, both activities keep me in shape and not forgetting the dam dog, two walks every day morning and night. For transport my bicycles, with a wee trailer. At the end ...

Re: FAK supplier

2 things I would recommend adding to a first aid kit are an aluminum SAM splint and QuikClot. I havent needed either yet but almost did when my dad cut himself with a chainsaw. The blade cut through his heavy work pants and slowed enough to just kiss his skin. He now has a nice scar running 6 or 8 i...

Strength and fitness

I didn't see a thread like this on the front page so I wanted to start one. The simplest way to minimize health risks in a disaster situation is to already be physically fit. Having a balance of strength and stamina will enable a person to weather adversity that much easier. I'm not a small chap. I'...

Re: CKRT EAT'N Tool

I have one but they are short so not ideal for eating big meals! I agree. I purchased one as a light weight piece of hiking kit and quickly found it was ill suited for use with my preferred freeze dried meals. The spoon is too short which results in messy hands reaching into the pouch. I now carry ...
