Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 10

The wife has been granted an allotment, half a plot. It looks a bit neglected, will probably result in some labour from me in the new year. Not sure what we're going to plant yet, spuds and courgettes did well in our garden, peas and runner beans too. Suggestions, tips and advice more than welcome!...

Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 10

Meanwhile I was pretty much thrown out of both classes for being a "know it all" because my step-mum had decided I was going to do it her way or the highway and it was easier to disagree with the teacher than with her when products of lessons came home. As long as you can stand the Texan a...

Re: Value Range foods compared

I put dried mushroom into my stock mix. It goves a good umami boost to almost everything - so yes we put mushrums in our Ragu. Our holy trinity of veg that goes into almost everything is finely diced onion, carrot and celery. It adds lots of flavour and is fried to translucent before anything else i...

Re: House fire

Wow. A very real test of preps. without them and your training and cool headedness it could have been so much worse. I am sure we would not have done so well. What did the FB have to say about how you handled things?

Re: Prepper -'lite' or full on survivalist

Prepper-Lite for us too. We do not have enough health or land on our side to go full prepper or survivalist. If SHTF big time I doubt either of us has the physicality needed to last long. We prep for bumps in the road and if needed, the ability to live in a much simpler society and hopefully be view...

Re: Disproportionate storage

One strategy I have used is that when my loan ended, I kept paying the same amount into a savings account. i was used to managing without the money andit let me start to build an emergency fund. I did the same for all pay rises. Of course this assumes that another disaster has not left you with the ...

Re: Storing grain in PET bottles - can I use CO2 instead of oxygen absorber?

How long are you planning to store these? PET is gas tight for short/medium storage or the big soft drinks firms would not touch it but I do not know how many years it will last before becoming permeable. As for using CO2. In theory I would expect it to work but you would need to be careful to avoid...

Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 10

How have you found the straw bale gardening? I have read about it but not had space to try it out. After seeing how my Trombocino squash loved my compost heap, my project next year is to use keyhole gardening techniques to add mini composters to my raised veg bed and anywhere else one might work.

Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 10

I wish I'd seen those last week. I have just bought a couple without the voltmeter. But at that price I may get these too. The plan is to have multiple batteries which while not long lasting are portable. The solar array is on the garden shed (tenancy like you) so batteries will need to be carried u...
