Re: Quorn meat substitute

Grown meat will become mainstream, I'm certain. The mixture of increasing animal welfare standards, pressure to reduce emissions and of course driving costs down will push this forward. I agree with Arzosah and jansman and think that small scale, local production and reducing meat consumption is the...

Re: First aid training

I've got my three day first aid at work course in a couple of weeks. At my company, we are not required to have first aiders, but we have chosen to pay for anyone who wants it. I was more than surprised when out of 20 staff only 3 people came forward. We're paying for the course and the course is du...

Re: Ikea Bulb

That's really interesting. On one hand I think it's a great idea. Very practical and easy way of getting some backup light source to the masses. On the other hand, I've a bugbear with the habit of putting none replaceable batteries in everything. The led will last 15,000 hours but the battery in it ...

Re: Who thinks a space earth ship is the ultimate idea?

But as others have said, the aim of making an extremely sustainable development is a great one. It just needs a good dose of realism.

Re: Who thinks a space earth ship is the ultimate idea?

Nothing is surviving a significant planetary collision. And certainly not to drift into space and carry on surviving. Even if you could survive the impact, as soon as the Earth's magnetic field and atmosphere go, you'll be fried by cosmic rays and extreme temperatures. But even if you did... To do t...

Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 7.

We've got a load of cast iron pans from IKEA. Really good value (last time we got a huge casserole dish and large skillet for around £40 in total). We've used them a lot and quality seems good.

Re: Shops selling off Covid surplus?

I've just bought 2 x 16kg sacks online and it came with an expiry of 10/02/21. Not happy and trying to return it. Is that a particularly short date? I must admit, we use so much flour that although we have plenty of stock, we don't normally keep it for too long so never look at the best before date.

Re: Bike to charge phones

It can certainly be done but humans just don't generate a lot of power. Pro cyclists on the tour de France generate around 200W-300W on average over a 4 hour stage. That seems a lot but I'm guessing you're not a Tour-level cyclist?! Us mere mortals would average around 100W. And that's considerable ...

Re: 2020 Potential Economic Collapse

A calor-gas heater might be the way to go. From a quick search: "A modern full-sized Calor gas heater rated at 4.2 Kilowatts will last for 50 hours on one 15Kg gas bottle, turn it down to 2 Kilowatts (the heat output of most portable electric fires) and it will last for 105 hours." A 15kg ...

Re: 2020 Potential Economic Collapse

For cooking, I have a two-ringed, propane camping stove with grill and a smaller single-ring, butane camping stove. Both of these work really well. I have a larger propane tank in the shed for use at home in an emergency and a box full of the small butane canisters. Both forms of gas and the stoves ...
