Re: So You want to Bury a shipping Container?
Wouldn't it be better to put a hatch in the end of the apex roof rather than cut into the container? I think so too, the container is nicely sealed - why cut a hole in it ? I actually have quite a bit of space underneath the container, it could be used for storage, although my container is next to ...

Re: anyone else seen this?
Looking at the two most important factors - warmth and water - I'm wondering if a tealight type candle placed inside the Kelly kettle would warm up water enough to make a passable cup of tea. It might require an insulating jacket around the Kelly kettle, and possibly some kind of baffle to keep the ...

Re: Making compost, how long?
A keen gardener I know collects vegetable scraps from the local café, they are happy to help. Potentially, there are many other sources now that pigs are no longer allowed to eat kitchen scraps, including school / works canteens and even supermarket bins. Riding schools generate a lot of dung, but a...

Re: Rat control Surrey
I keep 20+ pigs, so rats are always around. My cats do kill the babies, and a neighbours collies kill adults regularly, but by far the most effective way to get rid of them is to keep anything edible in metal bins and feed the animals in plastic trugs so they eat it all. Cut off their food supply an...

Re: So You want to Bury a shipping Container?
I highly recommend adding a sloped roof to stop water forming puddles in the container's ridged roof that will ultimately rust then leak. Good idea. Maybe this summer I'll put a wooden sheet roof up there, with a ten or fifteen degree fall, then fibreglass over it to seal it to the top of the conta...

Re: Good Morning fellow realists.
Welcome. So I take it that you are preparing for economic problems? That's my primary concern, but of course a lot of other problems will occur as the economy declines. I want to insulate myself from the fragile system as much as is practical, and put distance between myself and the millions of peo...

Re: So You want to Bury a shipping Container?
The only parts of a shipping container that can support weight are the corner posts. I have one, the information label says it can support 168 tons ! but if I walk on the roof I can feel it flexing. Mine is above ground, on concrete blocks, and lined with combination plasterboard/insulation ( a shee...

Good Morning fellow realists.
Hi all. I'm Catweazle, bred in Kent but for the last few years living and working in Pembrokeshire. I realized some time ago that the future was not as bright as the past has been, on account of the UK living on borrowed money, so decided to cash in my stupidly over-priced house and land in Kent for...
