Preserving Eggs

I've been randomly searching the web for different ways to preserve various foodstuffs and found this http://www.cooksinfo.com/preserving-eggs which I found quite interesting as I remember my mum talking about using waterglass during WW2.

Re: Eating out of date food.

Keep in mind that the dates are BBE, Best Before End. Thing is all the food stuffs seem to have the same duration, approximately 2 years, regardless of contents. However I've seen other websites that give some foods, if properly packaged and stored, a life of 30 years+. What I've never seen is a rep...

Re: Eating out of date food.

I tend to ignore dates, if the package/tin is undamaged, no dents or rust on tins then I'll go by common sense checks to decide whether or not to eat something, i.e. smell, no sign of mold etc. I've eaten tinned and packet food that's been several years out of date, and on the basis that I'm still h...

Re: new you tube post about solar batterys from down under

Really interesting, lots of good info in there, not just about the batteries but a easy to understand explaination of how the grid works, something a lot of people don't get. I can understand why this is being tested in Australia with their high levels of year round sunshine as well as a tech savvy ...

Re: Keeping warm without power

Growing up, the first time I lived in centrally heated accommodation was when I joined the RAF at 18. When my family lived in Aberdeen all the heating we had in the house was two open fireplaces and one parrafin heater, we used to call it the dalek as it was that sort of shape, during the winter the...

Skills Vs Stuff

Just found this article via a link on facebook, although it's trying to sell you a lot of prepper books it does make some very good points that are worth thinking about.

Re: Emergency home lighting

I think the first question is how long do you expect the lights to be out for? if it's 2 or 3 days then getting some cheap LED camping lights would probably be the easiest. I got a pair of lamps for £6.99 that you can clip onto your existing pendant light fittings. They have 3 light settings and use...
