To go back to the solar discussion, one of the options for dealing with excess power is to heat water, there are 12V and 24V immersion elements readily available that will fit standard hot water tanks

An alternative to car boot sales is the local selling groups on facebook, I've used these a few times with good results.

I've been told that having a metal liner when using a woodburner is better as it heats up quicker and helps to draw the fire, (or something like that), so it maybe that there's nothing wrong with your chimney. The best thing to do would be to check with the chimney sweep to verify what the problem is.

Another reason for getting a diesel generator is that you can use Red diesel, as it's not being used as a road fuel you don't pay the road fuel tax.
