Re: I have fruit trees!

if you have only planted them recently you might be better off removing any fruit which does set this year so that the tree puts its energy into establishing a good root system ready for next season.

Re: Jerusalem Artichokes

I am planning on planting Jerusalem artichokes for the first time this year. I am hoping that the fact that they are usually so prolific elsewhere that they will cope with the weather here and at least produce a decent crop

Re: chances of WW3?

I think you probably have to look at it in terms of what you can feasibly achieve in the 30 mins or so you would have until the fall out reached your area (if it was going to at all) and just accept that that is all you will be able to do. You won't be able to seal yourself off completely from the f...

Re: chances of WW3?

Katilea, I found this pamphlet a good easy one to look into the basics of the different aspects of nuclear bomb survival, it was published by the Canadian government. I think it gives a good overview and is easily understood http://www.preppers.info/uploads/11_ste ... rvival.pdf

Re: Space saving idea.

Thanks for that, I'm always looking for ways to make the best use of space in my greenhouse. I might try something like this against a bare wall, put some wood batons on the wall and hang these off them.

Re: Why is no one prepping to save the crowds?

There are many flaws in the OP, as itsybitsy points out, sweeping generalizations make me question how much you actually know about the subject. If you have thought about it so much, maybe you would be willing to tell us how you yourself are prepping with your community? Do you have tried and tested...

Re: Silage advice needed

Not a silly question! No, I have my buckets lined up and when I'm cutting the grass I fill them up and pile the rocks on top, then carry on mowing for a while. After a while you can fit a bit more in and weigh down again. Once the grass won't compress anymore I know it's full of grass, not air and c...

Re: Plastic

I am not 100% sure about this but I believe that if it was put in the freezer it would take a very long time to break down, if ever. I am a gardener at a market garden type establishment and we try to be as green as possible. Our fruit and veg punnets are made with plant matter which feels just like...

Re: Silage advice needed

Haha, not weird, I love it too, it lets me know I've made it right! Next year I think i'll use some electrical tape round the seal of the bucket to try and ensure there's no air getting in as well as wrapping them in silage wrap. Sometimes it can be hard not to get grass in the lid seal as the bucke...

Re: Hello from Orkney

Don't get me started on ferry prices ;) On my island neeps, carrots and tatties are grown commercially. I have grown a lot of veg successfully outdoors, my veg garden is walled by a stone dyke which does give it some protection but its still pretty exposed. I've managed to grow all the root veg, kal...
