Re: End of solar power, feed in tariffs !!!!!
Due to cost saving and lifetime of deep cycle batteries, I personally chose a grid tied inverter which continuously returns all unused power to the grid. Which as you say turns off in the event of a grid failure. However I have a small secondary system and a ups circuit to keep certain items like fr...

Re: End of solar power, feed in tariffs !!!!!
Thanks for the info wombat, put me at better ease. Hopefully will last but have my doubts.
Will say i would not have got a system without the tariffs, really think this proposal will kill off a lot of domestic uptake. 1p/kWh is ridiculous.

Re: Solar panels on East-West roof.
Ok so a few days ago the government announced the end of supportive feed in tariffs for small scale solar systems from 14p/kW to 1p/kW. Starting 1st Jan 2016. This news essentially makes any grid feed system an expensive waste of money! Beyond angry at this news, complete environmental u-turn by the...

End of solar power, feed in tariffs !!!!!
Ok so a few days ago the government announced the end of supportive feed in tariffs for small scale solar systems from 14p/kW to 1p/kW. Starting 1st Jan 2016. Having just installed two large solar panels and a grid fed inverter. I'm over joyed by this news that they would rather support environmenta...

Re: Project Powerbox (picture heavy)
Fantastic idea and project, the portability is top notch solution! :D Have a similar idea on the go, using a converted ups to provide 230, 24, 12 and 5v usb power will post when completed. Have you considered swapping the plastic tool box or placing in a larger sealed metal container, for EMP proofi...

Re: What preps are you doing this week? part 2.
This week its radios for me. Got 4 digital PMR446 portables and a PMR4476 only base station, just whats needed for helping out with youthwork/scouts, plan on lending spares out to adults. So wanted simple and licence free units that only take a few moments to explain how to use. Find the digital PMR...

Digitial PMR446 Any experience/Advice?
Recently sourced 4 Icom IC-F4029SDR PMR446 16Ch digital/8Ch analogue handhelds and a IC-6062 PMR446 only base station. As a result of a work comm's upgrade. Some very nice and pricey kit. :D Currently waiting for programming cables for the units. Have alot of experience using them, digital PMR446 is...

Re: First response kit
Great set of gear but defiantly alot of INCH items rather then immediate/short term equipment. I know you have included ways of gathering food but add some prepackaged for at least 48hrs, you may be moving or setting up camp or in an urban area away from potential sources. Plus think 2ltrs at absolu...

Re: No power!
I would expect for everyone to prep for off grid power solutions first and only as last resort go powerless. Firstly because electrical lighting is safer then candles/fire as well as rechargeable, candles run out. The sun/manual winding does not. Secondly if something occurs you will want to preserv...

Re: Barricading / Home fortification.
Would love to be able to board every window and door but that's 11 points on the ground floor for me, you then need to store the wood and sheets. ideally you would have all pre made and ready to go. I simply don't have the room, almost use the whole shed just for this. The other main point was how c...
