Re: Fire bricks

If it's just loose underneath a free standing burner ( looking at mine as I write this) then I don't think there's any real need to go to the expense of fire bricks . In the fire yes but not necessary underneath it. I'd go with something simple like semi engineering bricks or even for that matter co...

Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 10

Yes , when we were fostering social services paid for a roll of film to apply to glass surfaces. They were more concerned with internal glass such as cabinets or anything a child may run into or hit but the principal is the same. The film of any thickness won't stop the glass from being damaged or b...

Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 10

As an addition I believe some of these films also block at least some UV light which should mean things close to the window should hopefully not suffer from bleaching as quickly...

Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 10

A customer of mine was burgled some years ago. They got in by the crudest of methods by throwing a garden ornament through the patio door. Thankfully she disturbed them and they fled but still left a mess. It must have been noisy but despite it being a semi detached house with neighbours both sides ...

Re: General finance planning

My wife does our books and she's on the ball and has said it's really not that hard to do and we frankly can't see why people fork out for accountants unless it's for a large company. In many respects she seems more efficient than the government departments she is dealing with. When we sold my paren...

Re: The dark nights are coming

We have torches , oil lamps , candles and so on wood ready in the racks , blankets and so on . Saying that I do have the question the reliance or rather emphasis on emergency lighting. For the most part you should be able to find your way around the house in the dark. I can do it easily enough in ou...

Re: Future home heating

One thing I find amusing in a perverse sort of way are some of the comments about capacity. I've seen the same comments on social media where people will say "we haven't got the capacity /where's all the power going to come from for all these EV's and heat pumps" . But a comment I don't he...

Re: Mortgage defaults rising...

In the early/mid 80's I looked at a property and put in an offer. It needed a little bit of work but nonetheless I offered £17100 and it went for £17250 which I thought was expensive. A few years later I brought a house just round the corner and paid £45000 for it. In those few years my wages hadn't...

Re: Snails galore

I haven't sufferedanymore than other years with slugs and snails to be honest. Incidently with regards to snails or rather the empty shells you find in the garden I was reading that kids used them to play a form of conkers in the middle ages . Conker trees or horse chestnut to give them a proper nam...

Re: Soup!

I remember once on a re-enactment we made what we called lobby . It started as some bacon being fried up to which a tin of beans and some cheese were added and it was probably where it should of stopped but all sorts went in there. I can't remember exact!y but there were eggs , mushrooms , porridge ...
