Re: How long can you sustain your family on your stored food? And tips how to rotate
And also the possibility that action will be taken against "hoarding" in the event of a real situation. In WW2 there was anti-hoarding propagada, public sentiment was strongly against anyone thought to be hoarding and in some countries this was enforced legally too. Thinking about the las...

Re: How long can you sustain your family on your stored food? And tips how to rotate
I now start thinking if I should reduce my food storage to 1.5-2 months. These are the reasons: 1. I suspect financial difficulties are more likely than food in my case Agreed. I'm afraid a lot of preppers get focused too much on gear and stocks ( not just on here , I've visited several other sites...

Re: How long can you sustain your family on your stored food? And tips how to rotate
...not everything will suddenly disappear... Agree - I remember the 80s in the USSR: yes, some food and good items suddenly disappeared from the shelves (soap, flour, sugar, matches, cigarettes, alcohol is what I remember well because they were readily available before and then suddenly disappeared...

Re: How long can you sustain your family on your stored food? And tips how to rotate
. Those hungry family and friends will only comment if they know you have soooo much. Shhhhh. A friend in need is... a PITA. A friend in need is a PITA and a close family member is probably an Achilles heel. How many of us would just stand by and watch a parent or sibling descend into suffering? My...

Re: Disproportionate storage
The Heinz and the fishfingers are good examples of what I'm talking about. The brand names might not have yet actually disappeared from the shelves but the price seems to be making them disappear from your shopping basket. Ok so there's an argument that if you have the money to buy a year's worth of...

Re: Popped Jars and cans
Pectin forms a gel when it has the right concentration of sugar, water and acid. The correct acidity is just right to prevent botulism. This explains why my grandma would refuse to store poorly set jams and used them immediately. If the set jam has turned to syrup, one of these factors has changed....

Re: Disproportionate storage
A great and thought provoking post. So... Store more luxury foods and adjuncts and less staple rice and carbs on the expectation that a sack of rice will always be available. You may have a point. More Dolmio, less pasta. More Oxo, less dried spuds. More curry powder, less rice. Sort of . I'm not r...

Re: Disproportionate storage
How do you know luxury items will go before staples? Personally I just store what I think I need for general bug in scenarios. History basically. Looking back to say the second world war we see bread and potatoes weren't rationed ( although bread rationing did come in just after the war) . Meat and...

Disproportionate storage
I made a comment in the "how long will your preps last " thread and want to expand on that but rather than go off in that thread thought I'd start another. In the original thread I said that we are perhaps asking the wrong question because frankly I don't feel we're going to face a situati...

Re: Popped Jars and cans
In a similar vein I've had the odd tin blow and for what it's worth I've dumped them even though some when opened have smelt ok. An interesting one is some homemade jam. A few years old but it had turned from a solid jam to something more akin to a syrup. Tasted ok but less easy to use and it made m...
