Re: Micro Greens?

We grow micro greens on a small scale to supply a local hotel at the community garden I work at. It's very easy, you just need a tray with a bit of soil in, sow seed thickly over the surface and cover lightly. Water and cover with a clear lid or cling film and wait. They are ready to harvest once bo...

Re: I'm making a film - can you help?

I hope you find some volunteers, your concept sounds good and giving your participants a safeguard in the form of the final say is a good idea. I think that after the floods, storms and most recently the 'Beast from the East' that it's becoming more important to educate people about the need to be p...

Re: Low-cost recipe blog

I've made my own sausages, it probably took a whole afternoon to get it done. But then that included taking the meat from joints of my own pork, mincing them myself and then making the sausages. If you were just buying mince it wouldn't take so long. I used the intestine from the pig and they turned...

Re: Low-cost recipe blog

I love to cook and use both herbs and spices in my food as well as for medicinal purposes. I love a herb tea! One thing that really grinds my gears watching Jamie Oliver is when he gets the salt or some other seasoning and sprinkles it over his food. Every time he does it he says 'do it from a heigh...

Re: And sow it begins.

I am revamping my whole veg bed this year and only managed to get one bed finished on time which will be brassicas. I've designed the new beds to have an outer edge of perennial/self seeding herbs and pollinator friendly edible flowers so as well as sowing up my cabbages, sprouts etc. ive got chives...

Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 5.

Last night I finally started softening one of the sheep skins I tanned last summer. This one is destined to be a rug in front of the little wood burning stove which will be installed in my new bedroom when it's built (building work starts next week). I tanned three skins using a kit a bought from Sn...

Re: Water and sanitation when SHTF

ahh ok, it is new in that It was only installed 2 years ago but its not one of the treatment plants. We have a contract with Scottish water to come and empty it every three years. I guess we would have to think of some way to empty it ourselves if the need arised.

Re: Water and sanitation when SHTF

I have two 2000l water storage tanks rigged up to my guttering. They are used for the garden at the moment but that would be my water source should the mains go off (with added filtration). We have a septic tank which I think doesn't need the mains to work? I might be wrong but if the toilet cistern...

Re: How did you became interested in prepping?

Probably like a lot of people, I started thinking about it when we started our family. At this point you have extremely precious humans you have to protect at all costs! Being vulnerable to crisis of any type was something we decided we wanted to actively work towards avoiding. It helped that we are...

Re: I have fruit trees!

As you know Britcit, we are in the same boat. Although I am slowly trying to surround my property with an effective windbreak, this year I have decided to try growing a 'step over' fruit tree. My veg beds have a low (4') slatted fence around them to filter the wind a bit and to keep the chickens out...
