Nick, "Richards Bicycle Book", get a copy thats in line with the vintage of your machines, its the bible. Lidl and Aldi do decent bike repair equipment kits that are fine for home use though you may have to search or beg the correct cassette tool for older gear systems. The Haynes book isnt too bad...

I think it makes sense that another "downturn" is likely, but to what depth it is hard to say. 07/08 was harsh and the next one might be worse (just look at the slump in vehicular transportation over that time.
