Re: crank handle generator
With solar, you can at least be getting on with something else while waiting for batteries/devices to charge. There are some higher quality alternatives: Texenergy infinite orbit or Ex-military clansman crank generators, which come up on eBay fairly regularly. I'd rather try a small wind turbine, do...
Re: Batteries
Anyone know of a 18650 tester that tells you immediately what % of capacity it's at? I have a charger that tells you, but I charged the batteries in the radio, put them in the charger, and started counting up from zero again! I was scared of overcharging as the radio said they were already full, so...

Regarding "best" NiMh Cells, this website is good for comparing like-for-like (when the cell you're interested in has been tested): http://aacycler.com/ For Li-ion rechargeable cells (e.g. 18650 cells which have been mentioned), and battery chargers, I like this review website: https://lyg...
Re: Batteries
Very much in favour of both rechargable and disposable cells, on a case by case basis. Your current options* (until a new battery chemistry is invented) are: Disposable: Akaline batteries: 1.5v per cell + good capacity at low currents (clocks, TV remotes, etc) + reasonably cheap. - poor ability to d...

Re: Storing, preparing and cooking.
If you have a pressure cooker then dried bean/pulses become a lot more practical as they dont have to be soaked first although soaking cuts the cooking time time. We keep both dried & tinned beans. The tinned ones are for quick and lazy meals or for camp/emergency cooking where I want to keep t...

Re: Binoculars
I found this site useful when shopping for a pair of binos for a holiday a few years ago: https://www.bestbinocularsreviews.com/ . Various categories (price, use etc) to chose from, some for insane prices, but I guess that's the cost for top spec optics There's a list buried in the site where the re...

Re: Cheap solar battery charging
Not an ideal set-up as the 6 cells which are wired in series, should be kept balanced, else you've (eg.) 4 cells at 1.5v and 2 cells used (in, say a torch), at 1v. I believe (tough I've never tried), you could use one of the 1S lithium charging module boards to charge 3xAA in series, it would reduce...

Re: Rising energy prices mitigation
Length of time to pay back in savings is a key back of the envelope calculation I like to do in order to work out whether something really is saving money... For example, I love the look of those Mr D thermal cookware pans, but I wouldn't ever 'save' money using them because the initial cost is so h...
