Re: Home Solar System

A fuse will protected you from a catastrophic short, but running at 12V means you by necessity run at high current. My issues are thermal. For instance I use 35mm welding cable for my battery runs, which is rated at 240A. However, that's a max current. For prolonged use, ideally it needs to be a lot...

Re: Home Solar System

So, I have been stress testing my home solar power rig, following the heat issues due to corroded connectors. Now that everything has been cleaned up etc, am getting much better thermal control. However still have a few bits to solve. To recap, when running it at a 600W load at 12V, I was getting a ...

Re: Home Solar System

Great warning.thanks Makes a good case for using my 24v inverter. Instead of existing 12v I was surprised at the fire risk just driving a 600w load I've just spent the afternoon unbolting cables and cleaning connections. I am absolutely gobsmacked at the state of things, as in corrosion and oxidati...

Re: Home Solar System

After my little hot spot incident on my home solar rig, thought I would write up a little bit of info. Welcome to Compressive Resistance So, in my system, I found that I had a cable that was getting really hot. At the time I was pulling 600W through my inverter, at 12V, which translates to around 54...

Re: Aferiy P280 power bank

jennyjj01 - do you make up your own cables or do you buy them in? I assume you are running at 12V?

Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 13

A thermal camera! How interesting! And it sounds like it's been very, very useful. It was an Amazon deal impulse buy and I can't recommend them enough, especially if you are keeping an eye on things thermal. Not only has it picked up these hotspots, but I have used it to fix a colder than normal ra...

Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 13

Interesting experiment this afternoon. Playing with the new power bank, and trying different ways to charge it. Plugged it into the inverter, limited the charge rate to 600W, then left it for a bit. Probably 30 mins. Then took the thermal camera to the rig. Ooops! Got a hot cable on the battery side...

Re: Aferiy P280 power bank

Do you find yourself constantly moving plugs and power stations around to use the energy in them effectively? Not really. At this moment in time, the energy meter is saying that we are pulling 180W. Thats the fridge, freezer and an assortment of electrical devices like the router and NAS (which I o...

Re: Aferiy P280 power bank

The Gap in my scheme is nothing to power cooking or laundry appliances. Just enough for a travel kettle and slow cooker at the moment. Have you got a battery charger? I've got a small 2.2kw generator. I picked up an ecoworthy 20A smart battery charger designed for multiple battery types, including ...
