Re: Advice for a hopeless gardener
My perennial kale planted last year, (Daubenton's Panache)has a bad infestation of grey mealy cabbage aphids. I am at a loss to know how to sort it. Apparently ladybirds won't touch them (too full of mustard oil) General advice is to trash the plant but that is not much use for a perennial and it is...

Re: Advice for a hopeless gardener
I have not been terribly impressed with the coir either. Apparently it is naturally very alkaline and needs to have been correctly treated to reduce this - which does not apply to the cheap stuff. This year I have had a couple of bags of the same seed & cutting compost used by our local nursery ...

Re: Waste Management
It is noticable on our street that some households generate a lot more waste than others. We are in the low to middle end of things. I know we could do better but sometimes it feels like an achievement with my mob to just get them to put stuff in the correct bin. And if you have never thought about ...

Re: Uses for Flour.
I've done a lot of research into frying, poaching (of eggs), and making farls, American pancakes and chapatis. I don't use non - stick pans, because even good ones don't last very long apparently and are not cheap. I followed the suggestion of making chapatis, and I had a good result, although the ...

Re: Waste Management
I am much the same with fabric. Some charity shops will accept bags of "rags" as they still get a pittance for them. I reuse what I can and notice I am veering toward buying natural materials as these are easier to deal with at the end of their life. Worst case I can compost them. The recy...

Waste Management
As I was putting the bins out first thing this morning I found myself wondering how many of you have a waste management plan? I know that rubbish collection in rural areas is iffy at the best of times.ut But us city types rely on it. My very basic plan is: Wash all cans, glass, plastic & and pla...

Re: Uses for Flour.
We are not able to use the Dove's as it contains maize - aka corn. This has forced us to learn about a lot of other flours but is a right pain. If we ever ended up with WW2 style "you get what we have available" type rations we would be well stuck. Avoiding both is really hard as so often ...

Re: Uses for Flour.
I'm very grateful to yourself and all who have been so generous in providing information. I've spent a lot of time on Youtube on topics such as the pros and cons of non - stick saucepans, how to use a plain stainless steel saucepan for cooking foods that stick, poaching eggs, and so on. Sticking my...

Re: Uses for Flour.
If using milk instead of buttermilk I would add some lemon juice. Buttermilk is acid which reacts with the bicarb to get the farl to rise. If using milkyou will need to add the acid seperately.
