Tried tinned tomatoes and other tinned veg, but they are bulky, expensive, and have a short life. I think it is their acidity which corrodes the steel of the can. So I will come out in spots, scurvy even, whenever.

Thank you. I have since found that tinned baked beans three years past their sell-by date are still edible but have a slight metallic taste.

Some years ago, after I sussed that survivors of a nuclear war would probably starve, I began to double up on tins of baked beans in the pantry. Since then I have become very interested in this subject and am anxious to learn more.
